Getting
started
Installation: Simply extract the ZIP file
(setupPS.zip) to a folder and start PrinterScout.exe
Make sure that the windows
spooler (printserver) writes to the eventlog
Make sure that you have
read-access to the eventlog of the printserver
Start PrinterScout
and enter the "Printserver" where the printers are connected :
a) If you want to monitor a
locally attached printer then enter for Printserver "localhost"

b) If you want to monitor a
remote printerserver then enter the name of this Printserver, eg
"Printserver1"

Click the "Update
database" button. Now data will be read from the windows eventlog of
the Printserver into the
PrinterScout database
Once the Update is finished
you see the result in the data grid.
You can now apply some
filtersettings like Username,printername or timeperiod.

with a right click into the
filtersettings you get a context menu with some filter "shortcuts":

To sort the data in the grid
click on the column header
#1 How
to configure windows to write information to the Windows Eventlog
You must configure the

To do so, open the "Printers
and Faxes" control panel :

Select "Server Properties"
from the File menu:

Select the "Advanced" tab
and check the "Log spooler information events" checkbox :

To be sure that the
change takes effect we recommend to restart the computer
#2 Why
are there printjobs with "0" pages printed ?
Some Printjobs are recorded
with 0 Pages printed.
This happens with Direct-IP
/ Unix Style printjobs.
You may use the "Bytes"
value to estimate how many pages were printed.
Future versions of
PrinterScout will have some support for such estimations.
#3 Why
are there printjobs with "0" Bytes printed ?
Some printjobs are recorded
with 0 bytes printed.
This happens with
PDF-Creators printjobs.
PDF creators use the Windows
printing meachanism to create PDF Files.
In this case a printjob with
0 Bytes size is recorded.
